Upper‐level trajectories in the prototype problem for tropical cyclone intensification
نویسندگان
چکیده
Data from an idealized three-dimensional numerical simulation of tropical cyclone intensification are used to calculate Lagrangian air parcel trajectories emanating the inflow layer that develops beneath upper-tropospheric outflow layer. It is found about half these end up in itself. The other slowly subside mid- upper troposphere, below layer, and drift outwards as a result relatively weak overturning circulation region. Calculations show pseudo-equivalent potential temperature not approximately conserved along trajectories, indicating turbulent diffusion heat moisture and/or latent changes by freezing or melting appreciable troposphere.

Paradigms for tropical cyclone intensification
We review the four main paradigms of tropical cyclone intensification that have emerged over the past five decades, discussing the relationship between them and highlighting their strengths and weaknesses. A major focus is on a new paradigm articulated in a series of recent papers using observations and highresolution, three-dimensional, numerical model simulations. Unlike the three previous pa...
متن کاملToward Clarity on Understanding Tropical Cyclone Intensification
The authors review an emerging paradigm of tropical cyclone intensification in the context of the prototype intensification problem, which relates to the spinup of a preexisting vortex near tropical storm strength in a quiescent environment. In addition, the authors review briefly what is known about tropical cyclone intensification in the presence of vertical wind shear. The authors go on to e...
متن کاملAlternative Data Mining Techniques for Predicting Tropical Cyclone Intensification
Predicting the future behavior of tropical cyclones is a problem of great importance for the atmospheric science community with concrete applications. Researchers understand enough about modeling storm systems to predict their track, but forecasting their future intensity remains elusive. In the present study, we formulate tropical storm intensification prediction as a supervised data mining pr...
متن کاملPutting to rest WISHE-ful misconceptions for tropical cyclone intensification
The purpose of this article is twofold. The first is to point out and correct several misconceptions about the putative WISHE mechanism of tropical cyclone intensification that currently are being taught to atmospheric science students, to tropical weather forecasters, and to laypeople who seek to understand how tropical cyclones intensify. The mechanism relates to the simplest problem of an in...
متن کاملRapid intensification and the bimodal distribution of tropical cyclone intensity
The severity of a tropical cyclone (TC) is often summarized by its lifetime maximum intensity (LMI), and the climatological LMI distribution is a fundamental feature of the climate system. The distinctive bimodality of the LMI distribution means that major storms (LMI >96 kt) are not very rare compared with less intense storms. Rapid intensification (RI) is the dramatic strengthening of a TC in...
